DGE is primarily designed to demonstrate the distributed virtual environment research carried out at Newcastle University. At the moment, Kier Storey is the DGE developer and therefore, DGE highlights Kier's work on distributed collision detection.

DGE incorporates graphics, physics and collision detection. Rather than draw our own graphics, DGE accommodates Quake maps and models.

All code is copyright of Newcastle University. However, the characters and level models are copyright of their respective owners. In addition, the Quake level format and character model format is copyright of ID software. In the distribution we use the "Egypt TeamTemple" Quake 3 map by "BerneyBoy" and the "Hobgoblin" by "Noise Crime Productions".
