CSC8312 -- Bioinformatics Theory and Applications

Introduction

The purpose of these practicals is to supplement the work in CSC8390 (Research Skills) which is in second semester with the knowledge that you need now to operate effectively in this semester.

The purpose of these practicals is to cover three key areas

  1. How to gather additional information that you need to supplement the formally taught material.
  2. Differentiating between sources of information and referencing.
  3. Understanding plagiarism and how to avoid it.

This information will be taught in a very practical setting.

Questions

Answer the questions which will be uncovered during the practical. You will get 10-15 minutes to answer each one. Please work on your own for this time. This will be followed by a discussion on the results. This work is designed to produce discussion and will not be assessed as part of your coursework.

  1. What is the history of Newcastle United Football Club?
  2. Who discovered the clr4 gene? From what organism does it come? What does it do?
  3. What is "Generics" as applied to the Java language? When did Java first support generics? What systems can you find that provided a similar feature before Java supported them?
