I am a Professor in the School of Computing Science at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Teaching
I teach (or have taught) undergraduate modules in:
- Introduction To Programming and Software Engineering (C++, Java)
- The IT Professional in Today's Society
- Software Engineering I
- Software Project Management
- Systems Reliability and Fault Tolerance
- Research Methods and Skills
I am a co-author of The Apprentice C++ Programmer: A Touch of Class
Research
My main research interests are in
- parallelism
- visual programming languages
- shared memory multiprocessor architectures
- object-oriented programming
- bioinformatics
Administration
I am currently the Head of School.
I have chaired the Board of Examiners and Board of Studies, and been the Degree Programme Director for the undergraduate programmes.
I chair appointment panels.
I was an HEFCE Computer Science assessor in 1994/5.

Hobbies
I used to fly radio-controlled model helicopters. I'm pretty good at crashing them too :-(
I enjoy growing vegetables in my garden.
